50 years of leading innovation

Hermes Medical Solutions was founded in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1976. For five decades, we have focused on developing software that helps nuclear medicine and molecular imaging professionals make better use of their imaging data.

Our history is rooted in innovation. We were among the first to develop SPECT reconstruction software and dual-head whole-body scanning, and we introduced early medical image fusion technology that brought images from different scanners together in a single view. By combining functional and anatomical information, this technology helped physicians better understand and localize organ function.

As imaging networks grew, so did the need for connected, efficient workflows. We expanded our software to support connectivity, data management, image display and fusion, and advanced reconstruction. Our work in SPECT quantification also helped advance the use of quantitative imaging in clinical practice.

Today, Hermes Medical Solutions is an independent, vendor-neutral software company focused exclusively on molecular imaging. Our independence allows us to work across manufacturers, systems, and technologies, without being tied to a particular imaging vendor. This gives healthcare organizations the flexibility to build workflows around their clinical needs and existing environments.

Our success has always been closely connected to our customers. Through long-standing collaboration with healthcare professionals and organizations around the world, we continue to develop software, support, and services that address real clinical and operational needs.

Five decades of innovation

Hermes Medical Solutions began as Nuclear Diagnostics (NUD) in Stockholm in 1976 and has played a pioneering role in the evolution of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging ever since. This timeline traces key milestones in the field alongside the company’s own journey over five decades of innovation.

1970s​

The Digital Equipment Corporation nuclear medicine minicomputer based acquisition and processing station, Gamma-11, was introduced to the market in the mid-1970s. In 1976, Hermes Medical Solutions was founded in Stockholm as Nuclear Diagnostics (NUD). The company sold and serviced gamma cameras and Gamma-11 systems. Two years later, NUD sold its first commercial Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) reconstruction software package for Gamma-11, building on pioneering work by Stig Larssen and Anders Israelsson. This was used with prototype SPECT cameras.

1980s

The introduction of commercial SPECT cameras in the early 1980s led to significant improvements in nuclear medicine imaging, especially in cardiac and brain. During this decade, NUD opened an office in the United Kingdom. An addition to the company’s offerings was the ‘aerotable’ imaging table, which moves on air castors and is very popular with technologists and radiographers for its ease of use. Positron emission tomography (PET) was growing rapidly, particularly in oncology and neurology, with fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) widely used. Multiple-head gamma cameras became available.

1990s

In 1991, NUD began replacing Gamma-11 systems with Sun Sparc workstations, while also adopting the medical imaging DICOM standard. NUD delivered image registration software, PERFIT for cardiology and BRASS for neurology, and installed gamma cameras and specialized software for veterinary work, primarily with horses. Modern theranostics grew in importance.

2000s

In 2000, NUD set up an office in the USA and introduced MultiModality and Volume Display software applications, enabling CT and PET studies acquired on different cameras to be registered and fused. PET/CT hybrid imaging systems became standard in clinical practice a few years later. NUD developed GOLD software for vendor-neutral communication and storage, and TeleHermes for remote viewing. PACS became more widely adopted across healthcare. In 2004, the company opened an office in Canada, and in 2008, Nuclear Diagnostics officially became Hermes Medical Solutions.

2010s

Migration from Solaris to Windows operating system, and Solaris clinical applications were rebranded as ‘Classic’. New clinical applications were placed on the market: Hybrid Viewer, Hybrid Recon for quantitative SPECT reconstruction, and Affinity. Hermes Medical Solutions developed Voxel dosimetry, which has advanced the field of dosimetry significantly. In 2016, Hermes Medical Solutions became the legal manufacturer of the OLINDA/EXM 2.0 dosimetry product. All these applications went on to receive CE-marking and FDA clearance. PET/MR saw broader adoption.

2020s

Theranostics expanded rapidly, supported by new radiopharmaceuticals and tracers for diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. Automated workflows, fewer clicks, and improved performance became increasingly important. Building on decades of close collaboration with customers, Hermes Medical Solutions continues to develop software designed to meet the evolving needs of nuclear medicine, now recognized under one umbrella as Hermia.
