Training the next generation of technologists in Bavaria
The training covers the profession’s three main specialties: diagnostics, radiation therapy and nuclear medicine. In addition to X-ray technology, students learn a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic techniques – from use of CT and MRI scanners, to preparation of radioactive substances and quality control during radiation planning.
As well as deep-diving into the technology, students learn vital patient-care skills that ensure a treatment experience characterized by empathy, respect and dignity.
Hermes Medical Solutions provides Hermia software for the school’s nuclear medicine training. The collaboration gives students access to state-of-the-art functionality and tools that help broaden their understanding and contribute to an excellent grounding in the area.
Q&A with Lisa Eberharter, Division Head Nuclear Medicine and Lecturer in Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy at RoMed
Could you tell us a bit about the school?
The professional school in Rosenheim was established in September 2021, so it’s one of the newest MRT schools in Bavaria. Each year, we induct a new group of 24 trainees. This year, our first intake of students will complete their state exams and graduate from the program.
How do you use Hermia in the program?
The first year includes a theoretical introduction to nuclear medicine, and practical training begins in year two. This is when the students start using Hermia. It provides simple and helpful practical experience, so they have a good grounding for their internship work.
We have four student licenses and one teacher license. The student licenses are used in small groups of eight students during practical nuclear medicine tuition, enabling two students to work together on anonymized data sets. This approach ensures that students are optimally prepared for their practical assignments.
Why did you choose to collaborate with Hermes Medical Solutions?
I have always had positive experiences with Hermes software and wanted to offer my students the same opportunity. I also appreciate the fact that the system is independent of the various scanner manufacturers.
Could you briefly outline the course setup?
The students first acquire a theoretical understanding of nuclear medicine investigations and learn how to analyze them. In the second step, the students practice independently using Hermia software.
What qualities are important in a software platform?
Software is important as it makes a significant contribution to the visualization of the theoretical teaching material. The platform should offer a clear and easy-to-understand user interface so that the steps in the workflow are easy to follow.
Hermia works well for us; it’s easy to understand and learn, which makes things straightforward. Our students can independently prepare analyses of various examinations, which enables them to establish a better connection to the theory.
Do you have any advice for those considering a career as an MRT?
I would like to encourage any prospective MRTs to follow their path with confidence. Medical imaging is a fascinating and ever-evolving field that plays a critical role in patient care. The field is increasingly important; your skills will be in demand, and you will have the opportunity to make a positive impact on people’s health and wellbeing.
It’s a diverse and varied profession. Trained professionals are highly sought after and there are many opportunities to work internationally. Here, we have a very modern working environment with new technology and access to the latest developments. You can constantly expand your skills and develop in a variety of directions.
