Interview with Dr. Martin Wenger, Nuclear Medicine Physician, Klinikum Bad Hersfeld, Germany

Dr. Martin Wenger’s journey in nuclear medicine has been closely intertwined with Hermes Medical Solutions since his university days. Originating from Austria, Dr. Wenger trained in internal and nuclear medicine at the Medical University of Vienna and the Medical University of Innsbruck.

Currently, Dr. Wenger leads the nuclear medicine department at Klinikum Bad Hersfeld in Germany. He established the outpatient facility there by fusing two abandoned nuclear medicine institutions. In 2009, the nuclear medicine section became an independent, well-equipped department, running Hermes Medical Solutions software.

The medium-sized hospital serves approximately 30,000 inhabitants of Bad Hersfeld and many of its surrounding villages. The nuclear medicine department performs standard procedures such as bone, kidney, thyroid, lung, heart, and brain imaging. Its equipment includes two gamma cameras from different vendors (one double-head, one single-head), a radiopharmacology lab, and a laminar flow box for tracer preparation.

The team, comprising Dr. Wenger and up to five assistant technologists, manages around 8,000 patients annually, both in- and outpatients. Dr. Wenger highlights the crucial role of Hermes Medical Solutions in handling this volume efficiently:

The software is absolutely necessary. We have a large caseload of about 50 patients per day, which requires a smooth workflow. I need access to patient information wherever I am within the clinic, and Hermia enables this.

Dr. Wenger elaborates on the features and benefits of Hermia software:

“Hermia provides a single platform for all DICOM images, regardless of the camera or any other modalities used. Image acquisition, raw data calculation, and further analysis by the reading physician can be performed within the same workspace. All processing steps can be carried out independently – at different times and on different computers – through remote desktop access.”

He adds that Hermia also plays a vital role as a demonstration tool for the hospital tumor board, where its PET/CT multimodality viewing capabilities provide oncologists with a deeper understanding of image content.

Hermia also provides significant advantages when comparing images from different scanners:

“The software developed by camera vendors is typically updated every two years, and you have to purchase updates for several systems. So a vendor-neutral system like Hermia actually costs less in the long term. Hermia is faster and more user-friendly, as well as being server-based. In my opinion, it is always superior to software from camera vendors. In addition, Hermes Medical Solutions provides excellent support – my questions are always promptly addressed.”

An important factor for Klinikum Bad Hersfeld was Hermia’s ability to separate information for in- and outpatients, facilitating reimbursement documentation and patient data protection. The Hermia setup makes it possible to separate input data from two different administrative systems (a DICOM worklist for inpatients and a GDT-based system for outpatients). The acquisition systems scan the Hermia software every thirty seconds for new entries, ensuring highly accurate patient lists.

Dr. Wenger concludes with his thoughts on the overall impact of Hermia:

“Hermia software provides a single platform for all investigations regardless if self-generated or imported from CD ROM. It gives us an entirely paperless workflow with seamless connections to other hospital systems, creating a fully DICOM-based working environment. It can be said that Hermia software is the heart and brain of the workflow management in our department.”
